Viking Zoomorphic Knotwork: Urnes Style
This two-part class is an invitation to explore the elements and archetypes of Viking artwork through hands-on drawing exercises focusing on the Urnes style. Zoomorphic means ‘animal-shaped’ and applies to many of the interlacing patterns that adorned functional objects during the Viking era, such as ships, furnishings, textiles and tools.
Related to but more organic than Celtic knotwork, Viking knots also have several levels of complexity that can be analyzed and built-up one layer at a time to create new interpretations on a theme. The most striking example of this style is the Urnes Stave Church in Norway, with incredibly well-preserved wood carvings featuring elongated animals gracefully entwined with serpents and vines.
