This two-part class is an invitation to explore the elements and archetypes of Viking artwork through hands-on drawing exercises focusing on the Mammen style.
Viking Zoomorphic Knotwork:
Zoomorphic means ‘animal-shaped’ and applies to many of the interlacing patterns that adorned functional objects during the Viking era, such as ships, furnishings, textiles and tools.
Related to but more organic than Celtic knotwork, Viking knots also have several levels of complexity that can be analyzed and built-up one layer at a time to create new interpretations on a theme.
Mammen Style (950-1025 ce):
Mammen patterns can be seen on examples from Denmark such as the Mammen Axe Head and the Greater Jelling Stone, commissioned by Harald Bluetooth. This style is exemplified by the recurring theme of an abstract ‘Great Beast’ entangled with serpent in battle, which the viewer sees from multiple angles at once.
